In my sequel of # Mumbai city information blogs, today sharing historic facts about Ghatkopar where I grew up.

Ghatkopar in the 1920s and 30s was a village ringed by creeks and salt pans. It was administered by a municipal council led by a collector of the suburban district. It became part of Greater Bombay now Mumbai in 1945.

Ghatkopar station is one of the oldest stations in Mumbai, It was opened in the year 1877. It is a railway station on the central railway line of Mumbai. About 565,000 commuters use the station daily. An average of 45,000 tickets is sold daily.

There are many interpretations of how Ghatkopar got its name. Some say it refers to the hill range tapering off at Thane, “Ghat ke oopar”, which roughly means “on top of the hill”. Others believe the name is derived from the Marathi word for “corner” of the Western Ghats- “Kopara”, therefore, Ghat-ko para.

R City Mall is a shopping mall located in Ghatkopar West is one of the largest malls in Mumbai. The mall spreads across 1.2 million square feet total of 12 floors.

The names given to roads in Ghatkopar offer an intriguing glimpse into its recent history. It has roads like Nowrojee Lane Cama Lane, Hingwala Lane, etc

Metro Rly started running in Ghatkopar in July 2014. The Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro corridor has a carrying capacity of 60,000 persons per hour and The commute time between Versova and Ghatkopar was reduced by 70 minutes by this line.

It was inhabited mainly by two types of people. Those who came from proper Bombay in need of good and healthy climatic conditions of the sanatoriums and those rich #Sindhi & #Gujrati Bhatias, Parsis and very few Gujrati merchants who owned large plots of land and bungalows initially in his area.

Ghatkopar is also famous for its Khao gully wherein one would get all types of tasty, crispy snacks & eatables.

Ghatkopar is also well known for # Sri Krishna Havelis & #Jain Temples.

Ghatkopar has it’s own #Sindhi Societies like #Shival Nagar #Sindhu Wadis & #Sindhu Bags

Ghatkopar also have two big community halls like #Bhatia Hall & #BhatiaWadi for #Bhatias

Ghatkopar also has road names & markets kept after prominent politicians like #Jawahar Rd, #Tilak Rd, #Gandhi market, etc.

Today most of the old MHADA buildings are redeveloped and some of the well-known builders specializing in these projects are #Neelkant, #Shubham, #Mann, #Happy Homes, #Jaideep Builders, etc.

Ghatkopar has prominent areas like #Garodia Nagar, #Pantnagar, #Naidu Colony, etc

Today Ghatkopar is considered as #mumbai central hub which can easily connect to #International Airport, #Domestic Airport, #BKC #Vashi , #APMC market, & #Thana.
