No Dia Mundial do Meio Ambiente, 5 de junho de 2022, a polícia de Mumbai organizou um passeio de bicicleta no Bandra Worli Sea-Link sob seu programa 'Pedal-Up' - parte da campanha Sunday Streets.
O Bandra Worli Sea-Link é uma ponte de 5,6 km de comprimento e 8 faixas de largura que conecta Bandra nos subúrbios ocidentais com Worli no sul de Mumbai.
Em um dia normal, apenas carros podem usar a ponte após o pagamento de uma taxa de pedágio. Portanto, é uma via de geração de receita para o governo ou para a agência privada que recebeu o contrato para administrar o show. Portanto, os ciclistas estão proibidos de usar a ponte.
Foi uma rara ocasião em que as autoridades concederam permissão por 2 horas no dia 5 de junho, das 7h às 9h para os ciclistas usarem a ponte.
A corrida foi sinalizada desde o início dabandraportão de pedágio e culminou no Mahalaxmi Racecourse, onde a Polícia de Mumbai organizou uma pequena palestra no dia mundial do meio ambiente.
Mais de cinco mil ciclistas participaram desta prova da qual muitos deles pareciam ser pilotos de primeira viagem. Emocionados e felizes, muitos ciclistas pararam na ponte para tirar fotos e gravar vídeos e eu fui um deles. A rota Sea-Link é bem conservada, livre de buracos e tem uma superfície lisa que oferece uma experiência de condução confortável.
Mas é uma pena que a ponte esteja fechada para ciclistas. Li na Europa que existem pontes especialmente projetadas para ciclistas e pedestres – chamadas de ciclovias. Um desses exemplos é declarado por meu amigo Mark Wagenbuur em seu blog 'Bicycle Dutch' intitulado“A maior ponte ciclável da Europa foi inaugurada”que você deve ler.
Uma ponte normalmente serve para encurtar o tempo de viagem do ponto A ao ponto B. Destina-se a facilitar formas de transporte mais leves e ativas, como caminhar e andar de bicicleta. Mas no caso de Bandra Worli Sea-Link, o dinheiro dos contribuintes é usado para construir a ponte e se tornou um privilégio apenas para os proprietários de carros. Não é de todo acessível a terceiros, o que é injusto para os cidadãos que optam por viajar de bicicleta.
Dois dias depois de participar do passeio Bandra Worli Sea-Link, adoeci e fui detectado positivo para COVID-19. Esta é a 2ª vez que contraí o vírus COVID-19. No ano passado, em maio de 2021, foi a variante Delta que levou a uma semana de internação com vários meses de recuperação, e este ano foi a variante Omnicron pela qual tive que ficar em quarentena isolada por 8 dias por recomendação do médico.
Eu não estava usando máscara no evento nem nenhum dos outros participantes manteve protocolos ambiciosos. O vírus estava prestes a se espalhar e, infelizmente, fui uma das vítimas pelas quais não culpo ninguém.
A pandemia ainda não acabou e os casos estão aumentando em Mumbai e em outras partes do mundo. Andar de bicicleta ajuda a manter a distância social e é mais seguro em comparação com outros meios de transporte, mas apenas até certo ponto e certamente não em casos como esses, onde grandes multidões se reúnem. Aprendi uma lição da maneira mais difícil e tive que sofrer.
Estou me sentindo melhor agora e mais cauteloso do que antes.
