Q1: Tell Us A Little About Yourself

Donavan:I am a retired combat veteran of the United States Armed Forces, having served for 20 years before my medical retirement with an ostomy in 2019. I’ve had my stoma for nearly five years, as of this December. My greatest motivation has always been my family – my wive and three children. I aspire to be a source of inspiration for them, demonstrating that nothing is beyond their reach. Additionally, I have a deep passion for fitness, viewing it not only as a healthy means of coping with everyday challenges but also as a pursuit that requires discipline and dedication to achieve. This commitment has propelled me toward my goal of earning a Pro card in the NGA as a men’s physique competitor. I tend to workout 5/6 days a week based on schedule and work.

Q2: How has having an Ostomy Impacted Your Fitness Goals, both physically and Mentally?

Donavan:That’s a great question. I won’t hold back – when I first feel ill, I lost my direction. I had previously competed on stage and was eager to participate in my next physique competition, but everything changed abruptly when I became unwell. In the short term, I embarked on a steady two-year journey to recover and adapt to life with a stoma. This period was marked by slow and gradual progress, as everything was new and unfamiliar to me. At times, it took a significant toll on my mental well-being, as I struggled with not being as physically strong as I once was. Eventually, I reached a point where I was determined to step on stage again, even with my ostomy. Fortunately, I found an exceptional coach who understood my situation and guided me as we worked together to develop a physique that would be worthy of competition.

Q3: What are some common misconceptions people have about ostomates and physical fitness?

Donavan:I sense that many individuals have come to think that fitness is no longer attainable for them. I found myself sharing this belief after my illness; it wasn’t until I had made significant strides in my recovery that I recognized I could still engage in exercise. Initially, my capacity to lift was far below what I had achieved prior to my ostomy, but through gradual progress, I now find myself not only lifting heavier weights but also stronger than I was before. Therefore, the notion that one can no longer lift is likely one of the most prevalent misconceptions out there.

Q4: What are your top tips for fellow ostomates who want to stay active or start working out?

Donavan:The first step is to consult with your physician. Prior to advancing in my own fitness journey, I spoke with multiple doctors to ensure I was taking appropriate precautions to prevent injury. Once you receive the green light, begin gradually and seek out a trainer who understands your specific needs; this is arguably the most crucial aspect. Once you start, it’s essential to avoid ego lifting, as this can lead to setbacks. If you’re lifting weights, look for support for your ostomy, and the same applies if you’re running. Above all, be patient; there’s no need to rush toward failure.

Q5: Are there any specific exercises or fitness routines that you’ve had to adapt due to your ostomy?

Donavan:Now, I lift as if I don’t have an ostomy, but when I first began, I concentrated on lighter weights and performed numerous core exercises. I want to emphasize that during this period, I encountered a few instances where I thought I might have had a blockage, but it turned out to be nothing more than my abdomen responding to the workouts. Although I didn’t understand that at the time, I do now. If you experience any unusual symptoms, it’s crucial to seek medical advice. Lastly, prioritize proper form and correct movements, as this will significantly reduce the risk of injury.

Q6: How do you approach nutrition and diet as part of your fitness plan with an ostomy?

Donavan:This was likely the most challenging aspect. In the beginning, it was a process of trial and error as I attempted to consume meals I would typically enjoy, minus a few restricted items like nuts and corn. At the start, I made several mistakes, particularly with fruits, as I found that consuming them could lead to slow and painful blockages. Ultimately, it varies by individual and how each person’s body reacts. I recommend trying a new meal while ensuring you are at home or in a comfortable setting where you can attend to yourself if necessary.

Q7: What role has fitness played in your overall health and well-being since your surgery?

Donavan:My fitness journey has been a pivotal factor in transforming my overall health and well-being. Engaging in regular exercise not only helped me build confidence, but it has also significantly improved my mood and provided constructive outlet for my frustrations. Through consistent workouts, I have discovered the power of physical activity to elevate my spirits and sharpen my focus.

Looking back, I can’t help but wonder if I would have been able to evolve into the person I am today without this commitment to fitness. It’s more than just a routine; it’s a lifestyle change that has enriched various aspects of my life. The physical strength I have gained has translated into mental resilience, allowing me to face challenges with a positive mindset. Overall, my dedication to health and fitness has been instrumental in shaping who I am, fostering a sense of achievement and joy that permeates other areas of my life.

Donavan:The most rewarding aspect of the fitness community is the overwhelming support I’ve encountered. Whether engaging with professional bodybuilders or other industry experts, no one seems to bat an eye at my ostomy; it’s a testament to the inclusiveness of this community. Their acceptance and encouragement foster a positive environment where everyone can thrive.

Equally inspiring is my experience within the ostomy community. While it might not be as common for individuals with ostomies to pursue the same fitness goals I have, the opportunity to assist others and share my knowledge is truly remarkable. Being able to provide guidance and support to those navigating similar challenges adds a profound sense of purpose to my journey. It’s fulfilling to know that I can contribute to someone else’s path to empowerment and health, making a meaningful difference in their lives.

Donavan:Don’t hesitate to reach out! I would be more than willing to offer assistance and support. Whether it’s simply discussing how to being or providing guidance on what steps to take, I’m here to help. Everyone embarks on their own unique journey, and it’s important to remember that each path is different. Q10: How does your fitness regimen influence your ostomy care routine?

Donavan:Although every person’s experience with change is unique, I don’t feel that my approach to caring for my ostomy has shifted significantly. As I established my routine, it remained consistently effective, and I believe the key to this lies in individual differences. Each person’s journey is distinct, and the way we adapt can vary greatly. Ultimately, it’s about finding what works best for oneself while maintaining a reliable care regimen.

Q11: What message would you like to share with anyone facing a similar journey with an ostomy?

Donavan:Never allow anyone to dissuade you from pursuing your goals. When I embarked on my fitness journey, I struggled to find anyone who lifted weights like I do, and I certainly hadn’t seen any male physique competitors with an ostomy bag on stage. Regardless of the lack of representation, I persevered and confidently stepped onto that stage. Remember, achieving your dreams is entirely within your reach – so go for it!
